FFXI, Final Fantasy XI
Final Fantasy XI, also recognized as FFXI, is a
massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG)
developed and published by Square Enix. FFXI was first
released in Japan as a Sony PlayStation 2 game in May
2002 and in November 2002 it
was released for Microsoft
Windows-based computers. Final Fantasy XI made an
appearance in North America in October 2003 and in April
2006 it debuted as the first Xbox 360 MMORPG.
Since its release, the number of FFXI players has been
growing steadily and the game is one of the most popular
MMORPGs in Japan. In 2004 there were a reported 500,000
Final Fantasy XI members and in 2006 there were between
200,000 and 300,000 active players each day.
Three Final Fantasy expansions have been released with a
fourth one planned for late 2007. The first expansion,
Rise of Zilart, was released in 2003. The second
expansion, Chains of Promathia, was released in
September 2004, and the third FFXI expansion, Treasures
of Aht Urhgan, was released April 2006.
Final Fantasy XI is set in a fictional world known as
Vana'diel which is made up of 2 main landmasses and 2
smaller islands neighboring them. The landscape and
climate in FFXI ranges from northern glaciers to
southern deserts. Final Fantasy XI features four main
cities: Bastok, Jeuno, Windurst, San d'Oria and a large
Aht Urhgan Whitegate/Al Zahbi city area which was added
with the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion.
FFXI players can choose from 5 Final Fantasy XI races:
Elvaan, Hume, Galka, Mithra, and Tarutaru. There are 18
different FFXI jobs players can choose from. The 6
beginning jobs are: Black Mage, White Mage, Red Mage,
Monk, Warrior and Thief. After reaching level 30 and
completing certain Final Fantasy XI quests players can
choose from another 12 jobs: Bard, Beastmaster, Blue
Mage, Corsair, Dark Knight, Dragoon, Paladin,
Puppetmaster, Ninja, Ranger, Samurai, and Summoner. Upon
reaching level 18 on any job, FFXI characters can get a
support job.
Final Fantasy game play consists largely of completing
FFXI missions and FFXI quests which can be completing
for rewards such as gold, items, prestige, and access to
new lands. In additions to questing and going on
missions players can also take up Final Fantasy XI
crafting and FFXI hobbies in which gamers collect
materials to help them with their crafting. The Final
Fantasy XI crafts are: Alchemy, Bonecraft, Clothcraft,
Cooking, Fishing, Goldsmithing, Leathercraft, Smithing
and Woodworking. The hobbies are: Harvesting,
Excavation, Logging, Mining, Chocobo Digging, Gardening,
and Clamming.
Players can also level up and advance their FFXI
characters by defeating monsters for experience points.
If they want to compete in battle with each other they
can do so in Player versus Player (PvP) combat which is
known as "Conflict" in Final Fantasy XI.
